Frequently Asked Questions
1) HOW MUCH ARE THE SHIPPING COST?
Shipping freights are calculated on the size of the item and on the postal code of the destination.
You can siumulate an order and enter your postal code and city name: the system will show you the shipping options available for your destination.
2) WHERE IS THE ORIGINAL MURANO GLASS PRODUCED?
Not everybody knows that Murano is just a place. Murano is the island lying few hundred meters away from Venice, where all of the furnaces producing glass were transferred in 1295 by decree of the Republic of Venice, to prevent fires in the city.
In the global era, even Murano - as many other symbols of excellence - has become a victim of counterfeiting.
A rather conservative esteem shows that at least 60% of the products sold online and 50% of those sold in shops around the world are labelled as “Murano glass” but haven't been, unfortunately, made in Murano.
3) WHO ARE MURANONET AND MURANOVITRUM?
MuranoVitrum is a trademark registered in 2009 as a continuation of the process started by Giancarlo Angi in the 50’s: his mission was to sell, collaborate, promote and represent the excellence of Murano glassworks. Currently his sons manage with this brand two stores in Venice, with the very same core business and mission.
MuranoNet is the online version of MuranoVitrum.
4) WHY IS IT SO EASY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE MURANO NAME IN A FRAUDOLENT WAY?
Since Murano is not a brand but an origin, it’s easy to understand the extreme difficulty that the administrative bodies have encountered in trying to protect the original Murano glass from counterfeiting and false certifications.
A designation of origin exists: the Vetro Artistico® Murano trademark (www.muranoglass.com). But it’s not free and the smallest producers hesitate to join it.
5) DOES MURANONET SELL ONLY GLASS MADE ON MURANO ISLAND?
Our passion for beauty and the desire to offer our customers excellence at the best price, have led us to sell also glassware produced outside the Murano island. For these items the correct origin is indicated.
6) HOW CAN I BE SURE THAT THE ITEM I’M BUYING IS ORIGINAL MURANO GLASS?
- if you are buying from MuranoNet
Keep in mind that MuranoNet comes from a project started in the 50’s by our founder with the first shops on the island of Murano. Ever since then we’ve developed close relationships of mutual trust with customers from all over the world.
We are online since 1997 and would like to mantain our reputation of excellence.
That’s why the products we sell come mostly from Murano, while others come from Italy. Anyway, the manufacturer and its location is always clear.
- if you are buying from a brick-and-mortar shop
The first indicator is the price: if it’s too low compared to other resellers, then be careful and ask for an explanation.
However the better way to be sure is to ask the dealer a certificate stating the name of the manufacturer: then you will be able to check on the Internet if the artist exists and if the item you have purchased corresponds to his typical production.
- if you are buying from an online store
If it’s possible, choose specialized websites, ask for written warranties and the name of the manufacturer if not indicated. Just “Murano” doesn’t mean anything.
- always keep in mind
If there are no credentials on the seller or you have any suspicions, feel free to ask us or the Promovetro consortium (www.muranoglass.com) for an opinion.
We are always commited against counterfeiting of the name Murano and Murano glass, and will be always happy to give you a free advice.
7) A PRODUCT WITH THE "VETRO ARTISTICO® MURANO TRADEMARK" IS TO BE CONSIDERED OF HIGH QUALITY?
Since in Murano there are about 100 manufacturers - from many small independent artisans to companies with 10/50 employees - it’s easy to understand that to be located on the island is not a sufficient guarantee of quality.
Most of these glassmakers create items of high quality, both in technique and design, but it is not so uncommon to find some others that produce rather simple souvenirs.
The “Vetro Artistico® Murano” trademark is just a guarantee of the origin. It is owned by the Veneto Region and managed by the Consortium Promovetro.
8) IS IT POSSIBLE THAT A PRODUCT WITHOUT THE VETRO ARTISTICO® MURANO LABEL HAS BEEN MADE IN MURANO?
The Consortium had to face the opposition of many Muranese glass masters and manufacturers. We are talking of important and well knonwn brands such as Venini, Romano Donà, Barovier & Toso, Dino Rosin, that for different reasons have refused to join the Consortium.
They considered their brand value so strong to make another certificate useless.
In other rare - but important - cases, the manufacturers could not join the consortium because of a supply of semi-finished pieces coming from the Venice area and not exclusively from the Murano island.
Others - though less known - have considered too expensive to join the Consortium and preferred to invest their resources into production.
9) WHY DOES MURANONET SELL PRODUCTS WITHOUT THE VETRO ARTISTICO® MURANO LABEL?
Our family has professional relationships with many of the most famous glass-makers based in the Murano island and, in many cases, from the moment they have independently started their own businesses after years of apprenticeship.
We strongly believe in them and we want these excellent artists to be represented in our catalogue.
10) MURANONET PRODUCTS ARE CERTIFIED?
All of our products have at least one label:
- MuranoVitrum
The products carrying this trademark are the result of the creativity of our specialized craftsmen from the Murano island (unless otherwise specified)
- Vetro Artistico® Murano
It's a trademark certifying that the glass products are made in the Murano island. It was established and regulated by law n. 70 on /12/23/94 Veneto Region and it grants that the product has been entirely created in Murano.
With this trademark the Regional government protects the consumers and preserves one of the oldest symbols of the "Made in Italy", as it certifies that the products are manufactured following the ancient tradition of the Murano island.
The sticker cannot be counterfeit which means that it cannot be removed – otherwise it would break - and it carries the identification code of the manufacturer.
