What's the history of Murano glass?
Murano glass charms thousands of people around the world. But what is its history? What are its origins? We have visited the renewed Glass Museum in Murano for you.
The Glass Museum of Murano was founded in 1861 when the mayor Antonio Colleoni and the abbot Vincenzo Zanetti inaugurated an archive that gathered all documentation relating to the island of Murano and the production of glass that was then seriously compromised following the fall of the Venetian Republic.
In the second half of the 19 th Century the owners of the glass furnaces - who had returned to work intensely – donated many artworks to the archive: it is so that the archive became a museum.
The Glass Museum exhibits various creations that reconstruct the history of Murano glass, from its origins to the latest expressions latest. The collections are chronologically arranged: in addition to the archaeological section - with Roman relics of the 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd Century AD - you can visit the largest historical collection of Murano glass, with major pieces produced between the 15th and 20th Century, including masterpieces by Venini & C. , Vittorio Zecchin , Carlo Scarpa .
In addition, the museum hosts temporary collections. In the days we were there it was exposed Luciano Vistosi and EGE - European Glass Experience until 5th June 2015.
